Altana Giuseppe

Giuseppe Altana was born in Turin in 1886.
A sensitive colourist, he was trained at the Albertina Academy of Turin under the guide of Giacomo Grosso. Despite his success at the 1916 exhibition held in Sassari in favour of the Civil Mobilization, Altana gradually retired from the artistic scene. He lived isolated in Ozieri, a small Sardinian village, and his art was long undervalued by the Sardinian artistic environment.
He was finally awarded a prize in 1956 at the 4th Regional Exhibition of Figurative Arts in Nuoro. The following year, he mounted a solo show of 42 works at the Episcopal Seminary in Ozieri (where he exhibited again in 1960 and in 1972). An important anthological exhibition was held in Nuoro, at the Acquario Gallery in 1966.
Altana died in Ozieri in 1975.
