Born in Orani in 1887, Mario Delitala was one of the most important twentieth century Sardinian artists.

He realized oil, pastel, felt-tip and watercolour paintings, and was also a worthy mosaicist and an etcher. A complete inventory of his works does not exist since they are dispersed throughout Italy in public and private collections.

Delitala, together with his friends or pupils, Figari, Floris, Dessy, Cabras, Maca, Sassu, favoured one of the most genuine artistic revival in the history of Sardinia. He was always open to the new, advising and encouraging the young artists that he considered worthy.

Among his masterpieces, it is worth noticing the frescoes in the Cathedral of Lanusei (1927) and in the “aula Magna” of Sassari (1930-'31). He also decorated the dome of Saint Mary’s Church in Sassari (1931) and, together with Stanis Dessy, the cathedral of Alghero.

In 1936, he was awarded first prize for his engravings at the Biennial Exhibition of Venice. He took part in several travelling exhibitions stopping in Warsaw, Stockholm, Oslo, Amsterdam, Berlin, India and Southern America.

He died in Sassari in 1990.
