Stefano Butera was born in Varese in 1949. His first solo exhibition at the International Gallery of Varese in 1971. In 1973 in Geneva where his huge paintings evoked the admiration of the French critic and journalist for the newspaper "Le Monde" René Terrier, which devotes to him a flattering article. His figure is immediately linked to a strong sense of humanism. In the following years with many exhibitions in Italy and abroad until 1987, the year of commencement of his most challenging: a series of large paintings inspired by the Encyclical "Redemptor Hominis" commissioned for the church of Saint Grato in Bobbiate (Varese). In that work, which occupied him for two years, Butera reached a formal synthesis, bearing the imprint of the poem, headed by a genuine religious feeling. Beginning after the series of "Italian Landscapes" works fine and refined with superb craftsmanship performed by an absolute master painter specializing in colour overlays for oil glazes. We must say that the optimal size for these works is the large size, has a broad structure. In 1989 he was invited by the city of Varese to attend the exhibition which, starting from the museum of Villa Mirabello, going to Moscow, Kiev, Tbilisi. At the same time, the painter shows two books published by the publishing house Dall'Oglio. In 1990, in addition to numerous exhibitions in the Italian territory, Butera is at Art Italian Biennale in Tokyo Japan and in 1994 he exhibited at the prestigious Foundation Dominion of Canada in Montreal alongside the works of the great French sculptor Rodin. In the same year his amazing works are on display at the Gallery Borkas of Lima in South America. Since 1995, his works are on permanent display at the Estense Art gallery in Cernobbio on Lake of Como. In 1998 he participated in the exhibition "Neovedutismo" at the gallery Marieschi Monza along with other established artists such as Giovanni Frangi, Velasco Vitali, Federica Galli and a few others, logging as a painter "neovedutista”. One nice piece of Butera is in the Museum of Varese and by Lee Foundation in Taiwan. Many paintings are in nice and important private art collection around the World as for example: the Varese Museum of Art, the Lee fdt. In Taiwan, the Dominion in Canada and in Saudi Arabia.
